Conference 19-22 May, 2022

We welcome submissions for 15 minute pre-recorded presentations, Twitter papers, or Instagram posters that fit with this year’s broad themes, or post-medieval archaeology more generally. In response to the continuing pandemic the annual Post-Medieval Archaeology Congress will again be held online, over 19th-22nd May 2022.

We invite paper submissions that fit within the following themes:

• Accessibility in and around archaeology
• Material culture: connections and comparisons
• Public archaeology
• International links and connections
• Build heritage and urban archaeology
• Landscapes and territories

These themes will form the basis for the organisation of papers into YouTube playlists, Zoom discussions and Twitter sessions. Colleagues who wish to organise a session on a different theme are invited to get in touch with the conference organisers (see contact details below). While we will miss the conviviality of an in-person event, we also recognise that holding our conference online can make it more geographically and financially accessible, and we warmly welcome submissions from colleagues and friends who might not normally be able to attend an SPMA conference. We do however also recognise that fully digital experiences are not the whole solution, particularly with regards to digital divides, and are working to make our conferences more inclusive experiences, both now and in the future. The annual conference is open to all researchers at any stage in their career, to report current and recent research on any aspect of post-medieval/later historical archaeology. There is no geographical focus and we welcome papers from around the world. We aim to make the SPMA conference a supportive and friendly space, and particularly wish to welcome students and those presenting for the first time. All contributors and attendees are asked to read and abide by the Code of Conduct attached to this Call for Papers, and available on the SPMA website.

Paper Submissions

This year conference papers will be delivered in two ways:
1. Formal pre-recorded 15-minute papers made available for viewing on YouTube in advance of the conference. These will be organised into session playlists then allocated a live Zoom discussion with a chair, the speakers, and time for questions during the conference.
2. Informal Twitter papers, composed of 12-15 Tweets delivered over 15 minutes with 5 minutes for questions. These can be presented in any language.

Pre-recorded papers will consist of a slide presentation with spoken voiceover. We are accepting pre-recorded papers with voiceovers in any language, however, all pre-recorded papers should include English subtitles.

Poster Submissions

We invite ‘Posters’ from colleagues who do not wish to present a paper, to be hosted on the SPMA Instagram feed. While these will take a slightly different format from the usual poster construct, we know they will be just as engaging for viewers to see. Posters should be a maximum of ten images, with 2200 characters (which need to include any photographic attribution and also your attribution and poster title) and up to 30 hashtags, including the SPMA conference hashtag. Posters will be released during the conference onto our official Instagram account.
