The seventh annual Post-Medieval Archaeology Congress (PMAC25) will be hosted by the National Maritime Museum and the National Archaeology Museum in Lisbon in April 2025. The full programme is now available! You can also download the Book of Abstracts. Booking is now closed.

10 April: Social events and meetings. Choose a guided tour of the Maritime Museum or participate in a workshop on post-Medieval archaeology and language barriers. The Congress opening lecture is by Augusto Salgado, distinguished Director of the National Maritime Museum, ‘Maritime Archaeology as Social Archaeology’. The lecture is followed by an evening reception.

Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Workshop: Language and Accessibility workshop information sheet. The dominant use of English formal language within academic and publication settings excludes different groups of people in different ways. The predominant use of English excludes non-native English speakers, international students, first generation/working class students, and neurodivergent people. This workshop aims to explore ways in which the Society for Post-Medieval Archaeology could (should) actively work to break down some of these barriers. We would like to hear from you, regardless of your role or career stage.

11 – 12 April: The scientific programme. We have a packed programme of sessions running at our two venues. Topics include ceramics and glass for tea, coffee and chocolate; souvenirs and relics; bricks, tableware and porcelain; shipwrecks; fortifications and imprisonment; rural and urban life; diasporic communities; street art and public space; love and loneliness; memory; and more! Download the Book of Abstracts.

13 April: Walking tour of Lisbon. Discover some of the best archaeological sites in Lisbon and get to know this ancient city, in the company of archaeologists! Join us on our walk and see where the Romans produced the best fish sauces of the empire or visit the Roman Theatre. Winding through narrow streets, we will explore the Old Town’s walls built to defend the diverse people that lived, prayed, and fought here, including the Visigoths and the Moors. All this while we enjoy the great atmosphere of Lisbon’s most traditional neighborhoods!
