The SPMA was founded in 1966 with the aim of promoting the archaeology of late medieval to industrial society in Britain, Europe and those countries influenced by European colonialism. The Society now covers global archaeology of the post-Medieval period, up to the present day.

To achieve our aims, the Society publishes the journal ‘Post-Medieval Archaeology‘, and a twice yearly newsletter, as well as monographs. We hold our major conference every year as the Post-Medieval Archaeology Congress (PMAC). PMAC alternates between the UK and another European country.
