News from São Jorge Castle, Lisbon

Read our occasional update from Society members, ‘Notes from the field’!

Our latest story is from Susana Henriques. Susana is a PhD student at University of Évora, based in the Interdisciplinary Center for History, Cultures and Societies. She is also member of our PhD Student Group.

Find out about her research into the post-medieval burials in the cemetery of the Military Hospital of São Jorge Castle. It is part of the project InOsteo: Interdisciplinary Approach to the Osteological Collection from the Military Hospital of St George’s Castle (17th – 18th centuries), Lisbon and is funded by national funds through the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT).

The project draws on six disciplines (osteology, archaeology, history, chemistry, paleoparasitology and genomics) to better understand the health of the military in the past and how they were treated. The osteological collection associated with the Military Hospital of São Jorge Castle includes 947 individuals.

Susana’s research includes analysis of newly excavated archaeology, historical documentation, osteoarchaeology and artefact studies. It reveals insights into groups – such as soldiers, prisoners and hospital patients – and individuals buried in the cemetery.
