Postgraduate Dissertation Prize!

We are pleased to announce the latest winner of the Society for Post-Medieval Archaeology Postgraduate Dissertation Prize.

We have awarded the 2025 Postgraduate Dissertation Prize to Richard Hebblethwaite of University Collage London Institute of Archaeology.

Richard’s MA dissertation is titled ‘The Flask, Highgate: Society, Urban Development and Commerce in Post-Medieval London’. The SPMA judges considered this dissertation to be an excellent example of historical archaeology at a single, distinct site.

They recommended that it could form the basis of an application to a historic register or preservation board. Richard’s dissertation approach is also ideal for those interested to pursue a career in contract archaeology or cultural resource management.

The Flask is a well-loved pub in north London. You can visit to enjoy a taste of Richard’s research! Or take this virtual tour of the historic building.

We are delighted that Richard has joined the Society and is reworking his thesis into an article for publication in the Society’s journal, Post-Medieval Archaeology.
