As the date of our Annual General Meeting approaches (15th December 2024) we are excited to announce that two Council vacancies are available. We are seeking applications for two new Ordinary Council Members. These roles provide a fantastic opportunity for members to engage more deeply with the work of the Society and contribute to shaping the future of the field.
In this role you will support the work of the Council, primarily through organisation of our events and contributing to discussions at Council meetings. We hold Council meetings four times a year. Two meetings are held online and two are hybrid meetings in conjunction with our events. These are our conference (usually around April, held alternately in the UK and Europe) and the Geoff Egan Memorial Lecture (usually in December). We provide financial support for Council members who would otherwise be unable to attend our events, whether in the UK or in Europe. The position is for three years.
We are committed to ensuring that our Council reflects the diversity of the Society we serve, both in terms of lived experiences and professional backgrounds, and the communities we research. In line with this commitment, we particularly encourage applications from members who identify as underrepresented within our field, including (but not limited to):
- Women and individuals who identify as non-binary, agender, or gender diverse (aiming for at least 50% representation of women/non-binary members);
- Members who are based outside of the UK or who are not originally from the UK;
- Individuals from ethnic, racial, and/or religious minority backgrounds;
- Black, Brown, and Indigenous members;
- LGBTQ+ members;
- Members with disabilities;
- Members at all career stages, including students, early career researchers (ECR), and retirees.
We strongly believe that a diverse and inclusive Council will strengthen the Society, ensuring a broader range of perspectives, ideas, and insights to better serve our entire community.
If you are passionate about the future of post-medieval archaeology and would like to contribute to this important work, we encourage you to apply or to nominate other members who might be interested. Please send your application (max 500 words) and your CV to secretary@spma.org.uk by 30 November.
If you would like to be involved but you have questions, concerns, additional needs, or potential limitations on your involvement please do not assume that Council is not for you. We want to provide a supportive environment where people from all backgrounds and situations feel supported and able to contribute to the organisation. Contact president@spma.org.uk or reach out to other members on council for a conversation about being a Council member.
Thank you for your continued support of the SPMA, and we look forward to hearing from you.
